Update on Lacombe Long Term Care Facility

There is good news for the Lacombe long-term care facility. A January audit confirms a new manager is in place and new intakes will begin soon.
Residents might be aware that practical nursing students completing their practicum at Red Deer College raised a number of concerns about the standards of care at the Lacombe Hospital long-term care unit. In March 2017 Alberta Health Services (AHS) conducted an audit, which concluded that there were a number of breaches in standards of care.
As I have said, much of this is attributed to an inequitable and unjust level of funding per capita to central and rural regions in contrast to the two larger urban centres in Alberta.
Beginning February 12, 2018, AHS will resume admissions to the long-term care unit at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, which will also have the added benefit of reducing demand for beds on the acute care side of the hospital.
This is good news, and the local AHS Senior Operating Manager has assured me that the challenges at the Lacombe long-term care centre have been addressed to ensure all residents receive the proper care.
Regular inspections of the site have been carried out to ensure all concerns have been addressed and during this time admissions were put on hold. This has been frustrating for residents and families but necessary while investigations and improvements were completed.
A resident council is being formed and will have a voice in care decisions going forward.
I am thankful for the progress made at the Lacombe long-term care centre and for all the hard working staff at the facility.
Local doctors and nurses are the front-line of defense in health care, and the passion for their work is an inspiration to us all. They are selfless in the service they provide and tireless in their dedication to their patients.
I look forward to ongoing participation with AHS for the delivery of local health care.
