Seven Lacombe Ringette Association players are headed to Fort McMurray to represent Zone 4 in the Alberta Winter Games. The players from Lacombe, Blackfalds and Morningside are part of the Association’s U16 and U19 teams and will join players from Red Deer in the games which will be held from Feb. 16-19.
This will be Holland Wagensveld’s second games, she participated in the game two years ago as a skater. This year she joins the team as a goaltender. She backstopped her team to a bronze medal during provincial competition last season. Joining her between the pipes will be U16 player Sarah Hatto. Sarah, one of two girls from Blackfalds, led her team to provincial gold last season.
Participating in the Alberta Winter Games is in the family for skaters Taryn Miller, Faye Heindel and Erika Litwin all from Lacombe. Although this will be the first trip for all three girls, they all have older siblings who have previously taken part. All three are 2017 Provincial gold medalists and play on Lacombe’s U16 team.
Rounding out the LRA contingent will be forward players, and 2017 provincial silver medalists, Aspen Dorn and Hayleigh Malcolm. This will be Aspen’s second trip to the games. While Blackfalds’ Hayleigh will be headed there for the first time. They are both second year players on Lacombe’s U16 team.
Lastly, Lacombe Ringette has two volunteers who will be part of the Zone 4 coaching staff. Current U19 coach, Larry Litwin, and long-time ringette volunteer and former player, Jodi Smith Dorn, were both parent spectators during the 2016 games held in Medicine Hat. They are excited to take an active role with the team this time around.
